From Co-operative Federalism to Confrontational Federalism

As far as is generally known, there is no authentic history of 1000 years of subjugation of India. How we lost our freedom? Was it the Great Emperor Ashoka, who took to Buddhism abdicating the throne, who initiated the process? Did India lose its freedom because of resorting to non-violence, peace and prosperity? Was it dominance of religion over statecraft? Are we showing the same symptoms again?
